Everyone gets to that point in their career where you’ve shot at all the usual places. Beach – been there. Woods – done that. Cityscape – old news. So where can you go for inspiration?! Since I’ve been looking for unique photoshoot location ideas, it was quite appropriate that Kevin and Jen ask that we do their session at Home Depot!
If you are a photographer looking for a challenge, I definitely recommend checking out your local home improvement store.
And this is how all the hardware stores will get overrun by photographers!
You’d never guess that these beautiful photos were taken in the entrance way at Home Depot!
Thanks to Kevin for this awesome behind-the-scenes shot of Jen and I in the greenhouse!
Unique Photoshoot Location Ideas
This session was inspired by one done by Jenna Martin, a photographer based out of Montana. The challenge was to take pretty much the most unattractive location, and create some gorgeous portraits using one camera and one lens. No extra props, no extra lighting… no extras at all. We could only work with what we had available.
It sounds easy, until you take into account the cavernous lighting and horrid shadows. And we haven’t even mentioned the horrid cast the skin takes on from the fluorescent lights!
But I would definitely say that this was a great experience.
Working in unusual photoshoot locations makes you flex your creative muscle to think outside the box. You have to be aware of price tags, aisle markers, other customers, etc. But instead of thinking of them as obstacles, I saw them as things to work around.
So the next time you feel like you’re in a slump – challenge yourself by doing something completely out of the box!
These photos in the paint chip aisle were some of my favorites!

Love it! This really shows how the SKILLS you have matter more than the camera or the backdrop. Even made ME look decent!
You are a great subject Kevin, you made my job easy 🙂
These are great! I love the ones in the paint isle too! 🙂 Did you use OOF or just the lighting you had??
Hey there dear, thanks so much for asking! We literally only used the available light that we had in the store.
I was using my Canon 5D Mk III and my 85mm 1.2 lens 🙂
Judith, you’re so talented!!!
Aawww, thanks so much dear!!! 😀
