When you dream of owning your own small business, it’s easy to get caught up in the fantasy: you get to make your own hours, not having to deal with all the office drama (or having someone else grab your lunch out of the fridge!), and work in whatever state you want (dressed/undressed, in silence or with lots of music, etc). However, something that most people don’t give a lot of thought to is when your small business gets lonely (and trust me, it will!).
What we tend to not think about is the fact that small business owners are the only ones who work 100 hour work weeks for themselves to avoid a 40 hour work week in an office! Trust me, I’ve spent more than a few nights in front of the computer until an ungodly hour in order to write a blog post or get caught up on some editing.
What To Do When Your Small Business Gets Lonely
We humans are social!
It’s okay to want to be around people… in fact, it’s encouraged!
Here are a few things you can do when your small business gets lonely and you feel like you’re gonna go crazy:
Get a Hobby – remember back when you didn’t have your business and you actually had activities to do other than “work”? Yeah… you need to revisit some of those things again!
Connect – get in touch with other local business owners (don’t just look for other photographers!), it’ll be awesome to network with other people, and get away from your computer screen.
Put Together an Event – I’m a big fan of getting people together (like for this Head Swap Shootout), but there’s nothing to stop you from organizing a get together of any sort… from coffee to computers, the options are endless!
Try the Buddy System – it really does make a world of difference to be friends with other small business owners, because they can really relate to and empathize with what you’re going through.
